Marsh International Lecture Award with the British Art Medal Society

The Marsh International Lecture Award with the British Art Medal Society recognises eminent medal artists from around the world, most likely from mainland Europe, though not exclusively. 

Professor Hanna Jelonek 2024

Hanna is a Polish sculptor and medallist with an international reputation. She studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw under Gustav Zemła and Zofia Demkowska, and, following her graduation, continued her studies at the Scuola dell’Arte della Medaglia in Rome. Hanna is now a professor in the Faculty of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts, Warsaw, where she leads the medallic art studio; from 2012 to 2020 she was dean of the faculty. Hanna has a long-term, permanent collaboration with the Mint of Poland and with Warsaw’s Asia and Pacific Museum. She has participated in the International Art Medal Federation’s (FIDEM) congresses since 1985, and has been a member of FIDEM’s executive committee since 2012. Hanna has also taken part in solo and group exhibitions in Germany, Finland, Egypt and China, as well as in her native Poland. She is known particularly for her sculptures in bronze and stone, her cast and struck medals, and her drawings and cut paper works, which can be found in public and private collections around the world. In 2018, Hanna’s medal marking the centenary of Warsaw’s Princess Anna Mazowiecka Hospital won the BAMS Struck Medal Award, an Award supported by Thomas Fattorini Ltd, and in 2023, she was awarded the prestigious Sanford Saltus Award by the American Numismatic Society.

José Teixeira, aged 63, is one of the most important contemporary Portuguese medallists. He has exhibited at the International Art Medal Federation, all over the world, for many years. His medals are often innovative and always thoughtful, taking forms which are appropriate for their subject matter. He teaches students in Lisbon and also writes about medals. His medals have been frequently nominated and shortlisted for Awards, including the BAMS Struck Medal Award. José’s medals can also be found in the British Museum, amongst other prestigious institutions.
