Rodrigo De Sousa
Rodrigo has dedicated over two decades to advancing plant conservation and ecosystem restoration across Venezuela and Costa Rica. With expertise in agronomy, agricultural economics and environmental development, his work has focused on reforestation, soil stabilisation, and fostering connectivity between fragmented forests. A cornerstone of Rodrigo’s work is his leadership in the ‘Ridge to Reef Restoration Network’, an ambitious initiative aimed at reconnecting biodiversity corridors between the Osa Peninsula, Golfo Dulce and the Talamanca Range in Costa Rica. His work integrates ecological restoration with community engagement, fostering collaboration with local farmers, institutions and landowners, including stakeholders who are often overlooked in such work. Rodrigo has led his team in planting 396,511 trees across 400 acres, 20,000 of which were threatened species, and working directly with over 350 farmers. This work not only enhances biodiversity and ecosystem services but also contributes to climate resilience and strengthens local livelihoods, showcasing Rodrigo’s holistic and innovative approach to conservation. Rodrigo has consistently demonstrated motivation, dedication and innovation beyond his formal responsibilities in plant conservation, actively seeking creative solutions to long-standing environmental challenges and ensuring that his conservation efforts extend beyond ecological restoration to benefit local communities.
